Progesterone stimulates osteoblasts—the cells that build bone. Estrogen slows bone breakdown; progesterone stimulates bone formation. Both are needed for optimal bone density. The Women's Health Initiative, which showed increased risk with hormone therapy, used MPA—not bioidentical progesterone. Subsequent research suggests bioidentical progesterone has a more favorable safety profile. At RHPNY, we use FDA-approved bioidentical progesterone (micronized progesterone) exclusively.
